Xavier Avana's Journey
April 2019...
Alona: I know when I am bested. The Shapers are no more.
Commissioner: Put your hands behind your back ma’am. No funny business.
*Alona does as she’s asked and she is handcuffed. The commissioner stars to lead her away.*
Xavier: Wait!
*Alona smiles as the commissioner turns her towards Xavier.*
Xavier: Where is Zenas?
Two weeks later...
*Xavier sped down the highway on his motorcycle, Cassie behind him holding on tight as they raced towards their next destination. Alona had said the Shapers were no more, that was a lie. There were still holdouts everywhere. One of them had Zenas. That was the only explanation. Not that Alona had said as such, but she hadn't needed to. He knew she would never tell him where to find the man that had started it all. The man that Alona and the others betrayed and drove away. Was he safe? Alona hadn't said so either. Xavier knew before he could move on with his life he had to take care of this last piece of Shaper business. He had to find the Shaper cells, dismantle them, and find Zenas so he could finally go home to his family. It had been a long journey, but Xavier had a feeling things were just beginning. It felt a little too easy the day they took down the Pentagrams, the pillars of Shaper society. Then Luke escaped custody. No one knew how he got out, but he disappeared like a shadow in darkness. Xavier wondered if he had quit, or was biding his time. It didn't really matter one way or the other. If he had to face Luke again he would. Whatever it took to bring his old friend home once and for all.*
Cassie: Xavier, next exit.
*Cassie's words brought him out of his thoughts. The two had started, with police help, tracking any sign of Shaper activity, so they could the organization down for good, the organization the two of them had helped build. They were once revered among the Shaper ranks. Now they were public enemy number one. They were okay with that though. Xavier made the turn. They were about ten miles out now. It was gonna be just the two of them. Police presence would cause the Shapers to flee and just regroup elsewhere. he and Cassie were an adept strike team. Get in, break them down, see if they can obtain intel, get out. He pulled the motorcycle into a field in front of a seemingly abandoned building. Typical Shaper set up. The more abandoned a place looks the more people tend to leave it alone. There were no guards out front, that meant this unit was sloppy, or they'd been made and it truly was abandoned. Either way, there would be a clue for Xavier, something to propel him to the next destination, there had to be. Xavier and Cassie locked the bike around a decrepit tree and made their way up towards the building. Xavier glanced around, but there was no place for any spies to hide. They got to the entrance and each took a side. Xavier motioned Cassie inside. The place was illuminated by moonlight alone so he quickly lost sight of her but soon she gave a low whistle. It was the all-clear sign. Xavier made his way in, a little frustration starting to boil inside him. Just an empty building. The Shapers here had gone, and they'd been gone for awhile too if the lack of tracks was any indication. They made their way to a staircase. Xavier motioned for Cassie to go up, meanwhile he would continue to scour the bottom floor. She started her ascent and Xavier went back to searching for anything, a note, a scrap of clothing, anything to prove the Shapers had been here. He had gotten pretty good at finding the little things these past two weeks. He hadn't had much choice. The Shapers were scrambling with four of the five Pentagons locked away and they were clearly trying to keep what they had left. Xavier couldn't just let it lie though. Maybe if Alona had told him where Zenas was, maybe if she swore to leave him and his family alone. He knew that wouldn't happen though. Moments later, Cassie came back down and shrugged her shoulders. She hadn't found anything. Xavier turned to leave the way they had come in when he saw it. Pinned to the wall where they had enter, it was a Pentagram's badge. It was a message. Xavier pulled it from the wall. He showed it to Cassie, before pocketing it. There was going to be nothing else here. Time to head to the next location. The two made their way out of the building and unlocked the motorcycle. They drove off into the night to continue the journey.*

*Xavier and Cassie enter a bar. Cassie sits down and holds up two fingers, so the bartender gets to work as Xavier explores their surroundings.*
Xavier: You’re sure about this place?
Cassie: Relax. I’ve been here plenty of times. Isn’t that right Joe? (She nods towards the bartender as Xavier looks at her.)
Joe: Yeah, Cassie always was one of my favorites. Even after the Shapers started to turn dark and not come here as much, she would make sure to stop by when she was in the area.
Xavier: Any of the Pentagrams ever come in here?
Joe: Zenas would occasionally stop in, check on those who were here, grab a glass of water, but he always left a tip too which was nice. Other than him though no Pentagrams. From what I heard the last Pentas thought my place was a “stain on the map of society”...or something like that.
Cassie: So you haven’t had contact with anyone from The Shapers for a while then huh?
Joe: No. Sorry Cassie. When you told me you were coming I racked my brain but I’ve got nothing on Zenas, Luke, or the Shaper remnants. (He slides two bottles of hard cider down the bar. Xavier let’s the first one slide down to Cassie but he scoops up the second one and slides it into his jacket pocket.)
Xavier: Thanks. Come on Cassie.
*Cassie pulls out a $20 bill and leaves it on the counter. The two leave after she nods at Joe one more time. Joe walls over and picks up the $20 and goes to put it in his register when the door to the kitchen creaks open.*
Joe: They’re gone. Just saw the headlight of his bike peel out.
*Luke steps out of the kitchen.*
Luke: What are you pulling Joe?
Joe: Just business Luke. $20 from their drinks. $100 to hide your sorry ass. That’s a pretty good night from three “customers”.
On the road...
Xavier: Joe was lying through his crooked teeth.
Cassie: What do you mean?
Xavier: There was a half-eaten burger on a table Cass. Fries barely touched from what I could tell. We didn’t see anyone leave as we pulled up and Joe appeared to be in no hurry to clean it which means someone was coming back for it.
Cass: Maybe. I trust Joe though.
Xavier: That makes one of us.
*The two continued to drive down the road.*

*Xavier and Cassie had been up and down the east coast since the beginning of the May. The few Shaper remnants they had found hadn't given anything up on Luke nor Zenas. Xavier wouldn't admit it to Cassie but he was getting desperate. The cops, especially in Georgia were still helping but in other cities when they could get them to listen, were willing to provide a little assistance, yet they would also say someone missing this long generally either couldn't, or didn't want, to be found. Xavier couldn't blame Zenas. There were still far too many loyal Shapers out there and you never know who is or isn't. Even when he was part of the gang he didn't know every member. He took a turn and felt Cassie's grip around his midsection tighten slightly.
Cassie loosened her grip as they started going straight again. She couldn't tell Xavier she was so exhausted she would fall off if she didn't hold him. While he slept she researched. While he kept watch she would be on her phone. She was scrambling for information. Any shred that could lead them to Luke or Zenas. She couldn't help but feel like she was at fault for everything. If she'd realized Xavier and Zenas were the ones she could trust, and not the likes of Luke and Alona, maybe she'd feel differently. As it was, she knew she had nearly been on the wrong side. The thought of Xavier having her arrested made her sick to her stomach. Now a man they both trusted like family was hiding out. Unable to go back to his. They had to bring Luke to justice to finally fully shut down the Shapers once and for all. A familiar tone interrupted her reverie. She let go of Xavier with one hand to look at her smartwatch. She tapped Xavier on the shoulder so he would pull over. She hopped off once they had stopped and tapped the earbud in her ear.*
Cassie: Joe?
*In his bar Joe is surrounded by shattered glass. Various condiments stain the bar top and there's puddles of beer everywhere.*
Joe: Luke was here Cassie. More importantly though, someone came in while he was here asking for Zenas. I've never seen her before. Luke immediately got in her face and quickly ended up on his back. I had to take cover so I don't know what happened next but when the noise stopped I came up and the door was swinging shut with no sign of either of them. Watch yourself.
*"Click" the phone hung up in Cassie's ear. Did Luke have an ally now? Or was there a dangerous new solo threat out there, and subsequently a third party looking for Zenas. Cassie felt her heart racing in her chest. Her vision began to blur.*
*Xavier looked over at Cassie waiting for her to finish. Why was that skeevy bartender calling her now? He hoped it would be quick, they needed to keep moving. He saw her hand move up towards her earbud, but suddenly, she swayed and collapsed to the ground.*
Xavier: Cassie!
*He rolled her onto her back. She was breathing. She didn't appear hurt. Xavier wasn't sure what to do, except that he needed to protect her. So he walked her and then the bike off the main road, and into a nearby wooded area. Hopefully they'd be okay until she recovered.*

Mid Card · 230 commentsTwo days later...
*Cassie's eyes flutter before fully opening for the first time since she collapsed. She has to blink as the sky is bright blue, clearly indicating that it's daytime. She groans and sits up, and notices a set of footprints in the dirt beside her, Xavier's How long had he watched her? Where was he now?*
Xavier: Cassie!!
*Well that answered that. Xavier came running in from her right, holding some firewood. He dropped it and hugged her.*
Xavier: What happened?
Cassie: I just got dizzy.
Xavier: What's the last thing you remember?
Cassie: I...I got a call.. from Joe.
Xavier: Yeah I know. Did he say anything important?
Cassie: Luke was at his bar, the night I passed out. Someone else was there too, she confronted Luke and dropped him but when Joe looked up both of them were gone without a trace.
Xavier: Shit. And Joe didn't give you any kind of description?
Cassie: It sounded like he couldn't. I think she was covered head to toe, to better cover her tracks.
Xavier: She's smart, and mean. Might be Alona.
Cassie: We know she's still locked up though.
Xavier: Then it's someone who's smart, mean, and probably against us. When you're feeling up to it, we need to move.
Cassie: I'm fine. I could use some water though.
Xavier: There's a gas station about two miles away. If you think you can handle the bike we can be there in no time. We need to sit and plan our next move anyway. Luke, this new person, and we still have no clues on Zenas or anyone who can help us track him down. We need to catch a break and we need it sooner rather than later.
Cassie: I'll be okay on the bike. Let's go.
*Xavier nods and helps Cassie to her feet. The two strap on their helmets and get on the motorcycle, which Xavier had leaned against a tree. They speed off down the road.*
Moments later...
*Another bike peels out of the woods, it's driver determined to follow Xavier and Cassie. They needed to keep track of them and figure out what they were looking for. The two were rumored to be quite dangerous. But they were pushing themselves, which meant they were liable to make mistakes. That was worth waiting for.*
