I love SHINE and am actually going to my first show next week since a buddy of mine will be doing Su Yung's paint. A lot of the SHINE girls actually pop up on NXT like Mia Yim, Crazy Mary Dobson, and of course my future ex wife Leva.
If you enjoy women's matches you should also check out AIW. Every year they have Ladies Night you can usually find Havok, Athena, and Alison Kay on that. In fact I just looked and they have some DVDs for $15 that is nothing but Athena and one that is all Alison.

Thanks for all the info, pretty cool stuff. Didn't know the NXT thing at all, I know next to nothing about NXT in act, though I know Kenta Kobayashi is or was being "used" there. Sigh.

Kenta Kobayashi is KENTA, Sery.

Thanks Taker_2004 for the banner!

So KENTA is there but he's injured. He goes by Hideo Itami and they use him as one of the top guys.
Forgive me, but I stand by the notion that no Japanese wrestler will ever do big in the 'E, so using him well in developmental territory doesn't impress me. And no, I don't consider the likes of Tajiri or TAKA as having been "big". Over with some fans, yeah, but no higher-ups in WWE are ever gonna seriously push an established, raw "outside" talent before an American with the right look, promo ability (or mouthpiece) and merch potential. Or, if not an American, a Canadian with very practiced speech (Edge, Jericho). All due respect to Punk for coming in and making it, mind you, but he mostly made himself happen and that can't be everyone / can fail (re: Zack Ryder).
Frankly, I don't know why any puroresu athlete has ever even wanted to be in the WWE, between what I said and the styles/relevance of gimmicks/other expectations being so different.
Being a bit of a negative Nancy tonight, but - am i wrong? What's changed enough to sway my angle?
KENTA went to NXT not Kenta Kobashi
I said Kenta Kobayashi, not Kobashi. Kobayashi = KENTA. I know Kobashi's retired. I'm out of the loop on a lot of stuff, but give me a little credit. 😋
*Edit - missed Rhys' post noting the same thing, minus any snarkiness. Yay snarkiness!*

KENTA hasn't had a chance to do much at all since he was injured pretty early in his run but he's definitely regarded as a top guy. They are bringing in Shinsuke Nakamura with a similar hype.
And if you have never watched NXT you are missing what is usually the best hour of WWE on an average week.

God damnit. My lack of Japanese knowledge comes to bite me in the ass once again 😎 *stick foot in mouth *

Hmm. Wow. Thing is, I've watched NXT... but years ago, when it started. I know they have their own titles, etc. I guess when I watched, it lacked an identity and has since become more of its own thing?
Despite its status as a developmental branch, NXT has been praised for its high quality of wrestling,[1][2] captivating storylines, and the opportunities they afford female wrestlers as opposed to on the main roster; the latter of which has led to a change on how women's wrestling is portrayed in WWE.
This is hard for me to imagine. I'll admit, I've seen one recent NXT match - Tyler Breeze against KENTA/Itami, which was decent, I suppose. Breeze seemed like some weird John Morrison / Dolph Ziggler lovechild with some uncle HBK in there for good measure. Decent moves... I'd been thinking he had the win with his lovely little superkick - should be his finisher. I also know Paige came up from NXT, but in her case I just attributed most of her knowledge and training to her mother/random indies/Shimmer Women Athletes.
Huh. Might be something to check out sometime. They allow decent time for up-and-coming/brought from indies women as well? Again, I'll allow myself a curious "hmm". Mind, I don't have cable, just Wi-Fi access, so it's a rare thing I see the E nowadays, even if you ignore my personal disinterest/disillusionment with the promotion. I catch pieces of RAW and Smackdown once in a while at my aunt's place, that's it. NXT is on Wednesdays, eh? Would be hard for me to check out, but if/when I do get around to seeing some of it I'll post it in a more relevant thread. We've derailed this one too much already. 😋

Now it's time to underail (is that a thing?) the topic and talk about SHINE 33!
I went to the show tonight and can honestly say I was not disappointed. From the Sparkle match all the way to the main event these girls put on a he'll of a show.
Just to give some background, in case you didn't know, the show is put on in a dive called the Orpheum. Seating for the show is 1 row of chairs circling 3 sides of the ring. I think about 10 per side. Other than that you stand. There's no guard rail so you get involved in the action.
There were girls there I have never heard of and it made me realise how out of date I was. I have fallen in love with Thunderkitty. I honestly don't know why NXT has not picked her up. Her gimmick is awesome as she plays the part of your old time female wrestler from the era of Mae Young and Moolah. There are no fancy moves from her and it's total genius. No one is doing this and it's perfect.
Su Young and Crazy Mary Dobson are insane. Find their match from tonight and watch it. These two have it and it makes me scratch my head yet again as to why they are not in NXT besides Mary who comes to job.
I don't want to talk about what happened as you really need to watch it first and I'm afraid to spoil it. Is really love to see what you think Paige.
Also I got a hug from Havok tonight and totally fangirled... Gahhhh it's nearly 3am and I'm still pumped!
really love to see what you think Paige.
Uh... how do I actually go about seeing this? Mind, if it's a PPV I can order online, I'm saving/budgeting presently.
Dobson is indeed a talent. I may be the first person to state I'm not really into Thunderkitty's schtick. It feels a bit *too* dated for my tastes.

All of their shows are iPPVs on WWN.
Thanks for that, I'll keep that in mind if I get a craving for some live viewing of proper women's wrestling in the future.

Anyone else into this promotion at all / have any of the Shimmer DVDs? Last year I picked up Shimmer 61 and was reasonably impressed with the promotion. No ridiculous gimmicks, no over-the-top segments or unending promos, a real meat-and-potatoes kind of show with pretty solid and occasionally stellar action throughout. A few stipulation and title matches in there for good measure. Last night I ordered a slightly used copy of none other than Shimmer 1 on Amazon Canada from a reliable seller for under $20. Will be nice to have a throwback to 2005 - that was my proper introduction to TNA and what pro wrestling could be outside of WWE. Well, I'd seen a bit of Stampede Wrestling during a "meh" point, I suppose but never anything like TNA, and certainly not a truly dedicated women's division like TNA had back then (I dunno if they still have a dedicated anything so I'll refer exclusively to past-tense). Then it was on to other indies, where I discovered the likes of CM Punk. But I'd always loved women's wrestling. I've always loved to see barriers being broken down and outdated notions being challenged. In pro wrestling, I've always loved to see real passion and dedication. Sure, you'll find that in most promotions, in varying quantities. So whenever I stumble upon a promotion dedicated to the real original rebels of the ring, I like to give it a shot. Shimmer's the real deal, folks. Lot of passion and dedication to be found in this promotion and the indie female talent it showcases.
Would love to hear from other fans of the promotion. Discussion of Shimmer's sister promotion, Shine Wrestling, is also welcome here. I've not seen any Shine events myself, mind.
Also, I just have to say I love the "Shimmer" / "Shine" thing and the fact that Shimmer's dark matches, used to expose newcomers to the audience, are collectively called "Sparkle".
