The Resurgence Of British Wrestling

I thought I better write something about how ridiculously big British wrestling is becoming again. The wrestlers are really making a name for themselves worldwide.

- Zack Sabre Jr.

One of the best technical wrestlers in the world. Wrestles for Pro Wrestling NOAH & the US indies. He won PWG's BOLA last year. Has really come into his own over the last couple of years with his intensity and submissions. He gets to wrestle Kurt Angle at RPW in June.

Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

- Marty Scurll

Formerly known as "Party Marty" he's switched persona to "The Villian" and has been putting on some tremendous matches. Dave Meltzer went crazy for a recent match against Will Ospreay. "I just watched the @WillOspreay vs. @MartyScurll match from London from last week. Holy shit was that match incredible." Scurll is/has been the champion for a lot of the main UK promotions. He has also made it Stateside working in PWG.

Marty Scurll vs. Will Ospreay

- Will Ospreay

A supreme high flier who has buckets of ability and potential to be a top guy. Recently signed with NJPW who should hopefully be able to help pace his matches and instil some psychology to his matches. He's also been in PWG working at BOLA 2015.

image6-300x300.jpeg

Will Ospreay vs. Matt Sydal

- Jimmy Havoc

A crazy deathmatch wrestler who puts a lot of effort into his look & gimmick. He held the Progress Title for nearly two years and featured on TNA TV recently as a part of the Decay angle. Very Jimmy Jacobs esque in his appearance & technique.

tumblr_nxj0rekBBM1reh3xio1_500.jpg

Jimmy Havoc vs. Eddie Edwards

You've also got the likes of Grado who is still a big draw in the UK. Mark Andrews who won British Boot Camp and gets seldom used in TNA. Also Rockstar Spud who going great guns in TNA. There are loads of wrestlers to look up. El Ligero, Jack Gallagher, "Dynamite" Pete Dunne, Martin Kirby, Noam Dar, "Flash" Morgan Webster.

Wherever you live in the UK, there is a promotion pretty much near you.

For the Southerners you've got 4FW. They have exclusive links with talent. They have brought over Rey Mysterio, Alberto Del Rio, Pentagon Jr, Drago & Kenny Omega. Their next show has Shelton Benjamin, Carlito & Ultimo Dragon.

For the Londoners you've got Revolution Pro. They have their hand in the NJPW imports. They have used Tanahashi, Okada & Nakamura before and will bring over Ishii & Shibata next. They have also used Ricochet, Matt Sydal & AJ Styles. Anyone big on the indies, they will bring over for a show.

For the WWE fans you've PCW. If you've been featured in the WWE they will no doubt bring you over. They're heavy on the imports and this is how they pull in the fans.

For the Northerners you've got ICW. You can sum them up as the Scottish ECW. Absolutely crazy matches and ridiculous scenes. They started 10 years ago in a community hall in Glasgow. Now they're doing shows all over the UK. The biggest show to date was 4000 & this year they've booked the Hydro Arena in Glasgow which holds 10000 for their big show. They don't have the best roster but they have great spirit as was shown on their two BBC documentaries.

For the Alternates you've got Progress Wrestling. Described as Punk Rock Pro Wrestling, their shows are in the trendy borough of Camden in London. Their roster features Scurll, Ospreay, Havoc, Haskins, Sabre Jr, Big Damo, Andrews. Also rapidly growing they're taking on the 5000 seater Brixton Academy as they keep selling out in their usual home. Progress will also hold qualifiers for the WWE Cruiserweight Tournament.

A lot of these companies, ICW, Progress & RPW in particular have their own OnDemand services so you can watch their shows from anywhere.

Good comparison to Jimmy Jacobs...I didn't even think about it like that.  I really don't enjoy the work I saw on TNA and wasn't aware of him otherwise.

I also enjoy Tommy End.  He's getting a lot of bookings over here in the States too.  He's very similar to a mix between Bram's style and James Storm's build.

Good post bud!  Glad to see some UK involvement in what is sure to be a pro wrestling boom within the next 5 years.

Progress is good shit. They are AIWF affiliated, same parent I worked for in South Carolina.

Tommy End is good, he teams with Michael Dante as the Sumerian Death Squad. He's Dutch so its a good base to travel to the UK & to Germany for WXW.

I also really like Timothy Thatcher. His background seems to be shrouded in mystery, wherever he is American or British, has a British parent, is it just a gimmick. It looked like he was doing a Lord Steven Regal gimmick before he's switched to the mat technician/shooter style. He's a big guy too & always looks intense. WWE did an article on him & ZSJ for their website which is always a good sign.

Hmmm didn't know about thatcher...

Guess I'll have to catch up on him. I've seen his name on pwg cards but never paid attention.

Does anyone regularly get to the Progress or Rev Pro shows? It'd be lovely if there was a strong 4W contingent!

All this talk of the resurgence of British wrestling and no mention of WCPW? I've plenty positive I could say on it, but for now Ill just note that Drew Galloway gave one or the best promos I've seen in a long time not long ago, addressing Joseph Connor (I think that's the correct name). Angle/Rhodes was great, too. Lots more but I must be off again.

WCPW is a free weekly YouTube wrestling show (they do some iPPVs too) and they have some of the best british talent showing up as well as some big names like Del Rio, Angle, Galloway, Rhodes, Johnny Mundo and Matt Hardy making appearances on occassion.

It's easy to access (channel: WCPW or Whatculture Wrestling) and the weekly show is free to watch.

EDIT: Just noticed Paige's post saying pretty much the exact thing lol. I agree.

EDIT 2: It's Joseph Conners.

It is indeed readily accessible and utterly fantastic in terms of talent featured and the professionalism/dedication with which the shows are run/booked.

So with all the recent signings and how a lot of former top draws are in America primarily now...it makes Joe Coffey's stock only soar. I've only seen one of his matches but I see his name on all kinds of cards but if seems he's still a UK guy at heart regardless. Any of y'all seen him live yet!?

Haven't seen him live, but I've watched a lot of his matches and I agree he's a good talent.

A lot of people who appeared in WCPW have also now joined NXT: Big Damo and Nixon Newell are among these.

Is WCPW worth watching then? Don't know why I haven't watched any of it as I like What Culture Wrestling - King Ross's WFT moments are a good laugh as he's such a twat.

King Ross is quite entertaining. I know you meant WTF Moments, I just want to clarify for those unfamiliar who might look it up. He takes the piss out of WWE and WCPW matches/segs/promos/commentary/so on, including weekly episodes about Raw and Smackdown.

It's worth watching, definitely. It's not fantastic every week but what wrestling show is? It's more good than bad and the production seems to get better every week.

I am probably a massive hipster, but I really dislike WCPW. The wrestling is great, but compared to the atmosphere and experience of some other British promotions I find them pretty annoying. Then again, I am off to see them again in January for Ricochet so I probably can't talk.

Well, yeah, other british promotions have been at it for years. WCPW was just a couple of YouTube guys who wanted to have a wrestling promotion, it's not going to be perfect, production wise or experience wise, it's less than a year old... but now they've worked personally with some of the biggest names in wrestling, they are literally living the dream of most wrestling fans.

Well, that's one way to look at it, and all the best to them: they've built a sturdy youtube following and are now living their dream. What I found frustrating is there fairly consistent reliance on imports who always go over local talent, their use of wrestlers who have been trained and built up slowly over several years, their lack of care in running other cities that other promotions have worked incredibly hard to build (see running London the night before Rev Pro), and the loss leading shows based on advertising money for videos where they are sarcastic about the WWE. I'm not a big fan of the shows been based around the youtube personalities, especially when they have been shitting on WWE for doing the same. Like I say, I wasn't a fan of the live product either. I really do see them as 90s WCW. I hope they prove me wrong, but I think they'll ultimately do more harm than good to the British scene. Fingers crossed they train and create their own stars, and bring more eyes and attention the other indies.

I watched one the other day. Was good, but I was surprised by the size of the crowd. Seemed to be similar to the small local promotion where I live which was a disappointment. I'd have thought that they could pull in much bigger crowds than that... But then why pay when you can watch it for free legally online 😋

The World of Sport revival special went down well on here.

It was good for what it was. 2 hours of family fun entertainment similar to the shows you would get at Butlins.

Yeah, considering they are catering to a bunch of new fans and/or casual fans from 30 years ago, it wasn't bad at all. I thought Viper was really good, I want to see more of her... and Dave Mastiff is a bit of a beast. I wouldn't mind seeing it return as like a quarterly or even monthly show. I think that it could work. It didn't have fantastic ratings, but they weren't terrible ratings either.

A few of them seemed like they were updated versions of the WoS legends. Grado was Big Daddy, Dave Mastiff was Giant Haystacks, Viper was Klondyke Kate (who was in the audience and looked a lot slimmer).

I remember going to a wrestling show in my youth and Klondyke Kate was wrestling against someone. The babyface female wrestler kept trying to get the crowd to chant "Racky She." My cousins and I looked at each other, confused at what she was saying. It was only later on, we realised she was making fun of Kate's large size and thought she looked like Rikishi.

Another upswing. Spike have commissioned a new wrestling show to start next Saturday at 8pm on Spike (freeview 31) It's the promotion that runs as 5* Wrestling. But the first show is called Dominant Wrestling: Dundee. .

Wrestlers on the show include, Rey Mysterio, Johnny (Mundo) Morrison, Drew Galloway, PJ Black, Carlito, Magnus, Jay Lethal. I think the main event is Mysterio vs. Morrison. The company has run shows before in big arenas with big names and going nowhere near selling them out. But they used them to develop motion capture for their video game.

This will be the lead-in for Saturday nights fight night. They usually have boxing or MMA on.

No idea if it will air in the US.

The funny thing with this promotion is that they have never ran a show on time. They are also starting the show at 6:30 and going live on TV at 8. So will have to sync it up perfectly to avoid any calamities.
