This is a hard one. I love both bands. But if I have to choose. I'm going to go with Pantera.
I'd like to request CCR.

I don't even care... Johnny cash beating Bowie is a joke!
I'll vote Cash this time though.
Cash for me.

Bowie beating Metallica was a joke. Makes me wonder whether the result would have been the other way around if Bowie hadn't died so recently.
As for this one, Pantera.
Cash, easily. I don't mind some Pantera, but over all their music just kinda bores me. Cash deserved to beat Bowie though. Just like Bowie deserved to beat Metallica. Even the most ardent of Metallica fans have to admit that they are very hit or miss with their albums.

I had actually brought that up in our 4w chat... that i wondered if bowie would have even been a nominee otherwise, as it turned out in the chat a few people never heard his music until recently...
sorry i just have this weird thing about johnny cash, fantastic song writer.
I almost didn't even vote in the Bowie vs Metallica round... haha
And Reamer.... you could say the same thing about Bowie too... his last 35 albums since 1994 haven't been anything special at all.

Yeah Bowie has done a lot of shite too. I'm not saying he's bad, but his death would have had an impact on it. Like all those people who spent ages online after his death posting about how much of a legend he is but couldn't name a single song of his. I don't want to be disrespectful of the guy in death, but he wasn't as good as some people have made out. Fair enough if he's your favourite, as we all have different favourites and that's the joys of opinions and musical tastes.
Personally I can't think of a single Bowie song that I would rate above a 7. Have heard a load that I would rate below 4.
But anyway, this isn't a Bowie and Metallica thread. Cash should win this one, far superior song writer than anything Pantera have come out with.

I feel the exact same way about Prince. I find his music to be overly boring, but yet now that he's dead, people make him out to have had some of the best music ever.

Yes! He is another one. Bar a few (very few really) songs, it's boring and people are making out like he's the best ever.

Johnny Cash. I like some Pantera but as someone noted about Metallica, their albums work better to be cherry-picked, rather than taking in the whole thing. Their albums don't flow for me. I can't say I know many Cash albums straight through, but I do know I enjoy a plethora of Cash songs. Even if I liked all of Pantera's songs, Cash's music has had a greater effect on me in the long run.

I don't want to be too harsh on you because you're clearly ignorant as to what David Bowie did for music.
Using the opinion caveat for if David Bowie was good or bad is nonsense. If you like music, film or art as a whole. You would have admiration for what he achieved in the 1970's and understand what a pioneer he was in different genre's of music. He & Marc Bolan created glam-rock which was a commercial and critical success. He created his own unique and inspired characters which transcended multiple albums, multiple times. He wasn't just a man who stood on the stage and sung. The personality, the charisma, the aura that he produced transformed a simple man into a rock and roll behemoth.
If you imagine being an average child in 1972. Your future is bleak, finish school at 15 to go and work in a factory the rest of your life. You turn on the TV to Top of the Pops & on comes this man, (is it even a man?) he's got bright orange hair, high heeled boots, he's wearing a sparkling jumpsuit and has a face full of make-up. It would be like he's just come from a different planet. Your black and white world just turned technicolour.
He wrote songs for others including Iggy Pop's debut album and the follow-up Lust For Life. If there was no Lust for Life, there would be no iconic intro to Trainspotting. Mott the Hoople's, All The Young Dude's he wrote that too.
There were a lot of experimental albums he did because he was fearless and didn't give a shit what he people thought. No-one else in music skimmed from dance to jungle to industrial rock genres. They're avant-garde and for a peculiar taste but he brought a face and championed a genre that had no-one fighting their corner. Saying because he did them though diminishes his "status" as a musical talent is absurd and ridiculous. Robert De Niro hasn't done a good film since the turn of the century. But he's still the legend who did Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter & Godfather II.
Also pigeon-holing Bowie's career by ranking his songs on a 1-10 sterile scale is perplexing. Even if you were to do that, saying none of his songs went past a 7, that is what? Good? That's mental.
So to educate you, check out these songs because they're far beyond good, they're astronomically brilliant.
Moonage Daydream
The Jean Genie
Heroes
Life On Mars?
Rebel Rebel
Suffragette City
Let's Dance
Starman
Young American's
Ziggy Stardust
Modern Love
Under Pressure
Changes
Space Oddity

While I don't personally care so much if you don't like Bowie's music, I do echo Ross' sentiment and also recommend those classics and just Bowie in general. The man is an icon.

Rules are simple. Two bands (or any artist; doesn't necessarily have to be a band) battle it out. You vote for the better band. Winner stays on. Request bands (only one request at a time per person) and they'll go into the challenger list. Each battle will last three days (roughly). Once a band loses, it will be unable to re-challenge for 10 rounds.

JOHNNY CASH

Johnny Cash (born J. R. Cash; February 26, 1932 – September 12, 2003) was an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, actor, and author. He was widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century and one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 90 million records worldwide. Although primarily remembered as a country music icon, his genre-spanning songs and sound embraced rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, and gospel. This crossover appeal won Cash the rare honor of multiple inductions in the Country Music, Rock and Roll, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame.
Cash was known for his deep, calm bass-baritone voice, the distinctive sound of his Tennessee Three backing band, a rebelliousness coupled with an increasingly somber and humble demeanor, free prison concerts, and a trademark look, which earned him the nickname "The Man in Black." He traditionally began his concerts with the simple "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash," followed by his signature "Folsom Prison Blues".
Much of Cash's music contained themes of sorrow, moral tribulation and redemption, especially in the later stages of his career. His signature songs include "I Walk the Line", "Folsom Prison Blues", "Ring of Fire", "Get Rhythm", and "Man in Black". He also recorded humorous numbers like "One Piece at a Time" and "A Boy Named Sue"; a duet with his future wife, June Carter, called "Jackson" (followed by many further duets after their marriage); and railroad songs including "Hey, Porter", "Orange Blossom Special" and "Rock Island Line". During the last stage of his career, Cash covered songs by several late 20th-century rock artists, notably "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails and "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode.
PANTERA
Pantera was an American heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas. The group was formed in 1981 by the Abbott brothers – drummer Vinnie Paul and guitarist Dimebag Darrell – along with vocalist Terry Glaze. Bassist Rex Brown joined the band the following year, replacing the original unofficial bass guitarist Tommy D. Bradford. Having started as a glam metal band, Pantera released four albums during the 1980s. Looking for a new and heavier sound, Pantera replaced Glaze with Phil Anselmo in late 1986 and released Power Metal in 1988. With its fifth album, 1990's Cowboys from Hell, Pantera introduced a groove metal sound. Pantera's sixth album, 1992's Vulgar Display of Power, exhibited an even heavier sound. Far Beyond Driven (1994) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
Tensions began to surface among the band members when Anselmo became addicted to heroin in 1995; he almost died from an overdose in 1996. These tensions resulted in the recording sessions for The Great Southern Trendkill (1996) being held separately. The ongoing tension lasted for another seven years, during which only one studio album, Reinventing the Steel (2000), was recorded. Pantera went on hiatus in 2001, but was disbanded by the Abbott brothers in 2003 amid communication problems and their conclusion that Anselmo would not return to the band.
The Abbott brothers went on to form Damageplan, while Anselmo continued work on several side projects, including Down in which Rex Brown joined as well. On December 8, 2004, Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed on stage by a mentally unstable fan during a Damageplan concert in Columbus, Ohio, permanently ending hopes for a reunion. While being a heavy metal band, Pantera's style was considered both groove metal, and thrash metal. Pantera's early material has been described as glam metal. Pantera also has been influential to the development of nu metal, metalcore, and several other movements. They have also been called one of the pioneers of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal.
