The Blue Print

As we noted earlier this week, Impact Wrestling has officially acquired Jeff Jarrett’s Global Force Wrestling, and according to The Tennessean, TNA Wrestling has plans to rebrand itself as GFW.

The report notes that the Thursday night show on POP TV will continue to be called Impact, however in order to distance itself from the old TNA name and the legal drama and financial issues the company had, parent company Anthem Sports will be rebranding TNA Wrestling as GFW, and Jeff Jarrett remain the creative head of Impact.

“We’re a global brand. We have partnerships in Mexico, Japan, other places. Collectively coming together, we’ve combined forces and basically the rebrand final touches happen (on Sunday) at ‘Slammiversary.'”

Anthem’s Ed Nordholm added that the double meaning of TNA, which stands for Total Nonstop Action but also has a sexual connotation, was a turn off for many potential marketing partners. Nordholm also said the company is working on developing a streaming OnDemand service to access the vast Impact tape library. Nordholm had the following to say:

“When Anthem got involved we saw a rare opportunity to get involved with an asset that already had global distribution. It’s a 3,500-hour library, broadcast in 120 countries, existing distribution contracts in India, Africa and now the United Kingdom. The timeline to take a ground zero promotion to that kind of penetration was 15 years. The work now is to fix some things.”

And here I was thinking that they were going to go will Impact Wrestling with the branding. Not sure why they didn't just do that anyway. GFW though is a big step as that's full rebranding. Probably for the best, as the TNA brand isn't well thought off. Find it odd for a company to buy another one and take their name instead of just absorbing it, but hopefully a good move.

They're ringing in the changes now.

So the other day they released this as their new logo.

This has already been changed, and now looks like this:

Apparently the reason for this change is that the promotion would be Global Force Wrestling Impact Wrestling, which it too much Wrestling for the name. It's also the second time this year that the promotion has changed it's name - from TNA, to Impact Wrestling and now Global Force Wrestling as many people expected.

They've not updated the logo on their site or social media accounts yet, but that's surely only a matter of time now.

Jeff Jarrett actually got asked yesterday about what the actual name of the promotion will be amid some confusion with fans. He admitted that fans found it confusing with the Impact Wrestling name and TNA for years, before it was decided to name the promotion Impact Wrestling earlier this year. And the name is definitely set to change, but it will be a progressive change according to Jarrett - "It's not going to happen overnight." The name of the promotion will be GFW and they will go back to having just the show named Impact.

The "it's not going to happen overnight" part is surely just going to add to confusion. Just name the promotion GFW already and make it clear that it is just the show that is called Impact now. No one would complain. Pretty much everyone expected this move to happen anyway.

Main Event

Prefer the logo with Wrestling in it, but it makes sense.

So they are going to officially name the promotion GFW? Nice. That's how it should be, since it's a wrestling promotions name. I know Impact Wrestling was the promotion name, but you can't run with two promotion names and it makes sense to use the GFW name as Impact Wrestling just makes people think TNA. And a show doesn't need Wrestling to be in the name, as shown by WWE.

I liked the name Impact Wrestling as a promotion name. Shame to see it go, but it really was expected. Should have literally just said that the promotion is now GFW though, got rid of the old belts and been full on clear on the name change. Even if they have to call the show Impact Wrestling for a bit instead of just Impact. Get rid of the IW twitter and facebook pages, redirect the site to GFW (which seriously needs updating as it still has their old logo). They've had weeks to plan this so makes no sense to me. Just get it done. If they're calling it GFW, which it sounds like according to Jarrett, get everything in place for it already. The GFW site shouldn't still have the old logo plastered all over it - which is shit by the way, so glad they've changing it. Seriously, looks like it was designed by a teenager who thought thinks that it looks really cool, when it actually looks really shit.

I mean look at this:

What's with the smoke and paint splatters? It's like someone was experimenting with Photoshop and just figured fuck it, this will do as it shows everything I've learnt in online tutorials in the past few hours.

Also, I like how they've left it to Jarrett to answer a random question on what the promotion will actually be called. That's when you know it's not been handled as well as it should have. Should be made clear and should happen already, not a slow process to avoid confusion which will probably add more confusion. Probably have some short term commitments with the Impact Wrestling name, or they've filmed a bit ahead like usual so waiting for them to air. Who knows with them.

Bishoff made laugh though:

What is Global Force Wrestling? What was it? They didn’t tour. They shot a couple television shows in Las Vegas that nobody has ever seen. None of their talent was ever signed to their organization. So, exactly what were their assets other than a logo and Jeff and Karen Jarrett? What was Global Force Wrestling? When you say, “We acquired Global Force Wrestling,” what exactly did you acquire since there were no television rights. There was no revenue. There were no contracts in place. There was no talent exclusively signed to the organization. I know it makes a great press release but what in the hell did they acquire other than a logo?

He has a point. TNA/Impact Wrestling or whatever aquired a promotion and decide to take on their name. Not usually how things work. It doesn't seem like they'll be using the GFW logo, so that would be a waste of money. No contracts? So they've basically bought the name from Jeff Jarrett and brought him on board. Well, and titles I guess if they're going to keep the GFW ones and not design new ones.
