Update: CM Punk has reportedly signed with AEW
Fightful Select learned last week that CM Punk has been in talks to make a return to pro wrestling as an in-ring performer, with sources indicating that AEW is the most likely landing point.
There are people within WWE that are said to believe CM Punk is heading to AEW. However, there has been no confirmation that CM Punk has signed with any company at this time.
In an interview with Uproxx.com from earlier this year, CM Punk talked about how it would take the right scenario for him to return…
“From a creative mind standpoint, stepping back and looking at the landscape of everything, there are people in WWE that I have wrestled before that maybe, in a certain situation could be interesting. There’s also the business side of things. What’s the biggest possible match for CM Punk? I think there’s Kenny Omega on the one side. And, you know, unfortunately, ironically enough, for me to go back to WWE, who’s the biggest match for me? It’s probably Triple H. That’s ironic because it’s nothing I’m interested in. It’s just what it is. Am I going to be a businessman and say that’s the match, that’s the big-money match? Well, it’s not my money, so it’s not for me to say.”
Obviously, having Punk end his career in AEW would be awesome. He's been burned enough with WWE where I don't think he'd give them another chance but honestly, you never know.
An update from Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select:
Sapp said that his report has not been confirmed by Punk or AEW and there is no contract signed or a set date for a debut, but enough sources indicated the same news which is why he felt confident enough to release the news.
Sapp added that he has been told recently that WWE officials believe that Punk is indeed heading to the competition, a signing which could provide a massive boost to the promotion to increase its audience.

Admin · 3,242 commentsI'd love to see him make a return. He's been out of the game so long that he'd feel fresh. Considering he's been adamant that he's retired though and his MMA career went tits up, I'd be interested to see what kind of shape he's in. AEW would probably have a better work schedule that WWE which would help him with that.

AEW was very close to working on a deal with Punk, and Ringside News exclusively reported that it was virtually done. All they needed to do was sign the contract. We can now report that the deal is actually finished.
A source has confirmed that, “Punk signed on this morning!” Obviously, there is a lot of excitement over this deal. It was not confirmed when he will debut, but we were told “Punk will be on TV nearly every week.”

I didn't think i'd care when and if punk came back.. probably because i assumed he would swallow his pride and go back to wwe... but this is even better and i welcome the punker back.

Mid Card · 347 commentsI am convinced it's a grift and it's not going to happen and it's going to harm everyone's expectations.
Once a man would spend a week patiently waiting if he missed a stage coach, but now he rages if he misses the first section of a revolving door.

It would be total suicide for AEW though to troll their fans that hard.
Also what's a grift? Never heard of that.

A grift is just a petty small little lie, but typically that is used for monetary gain, kind of like to swindle someone.

Main Event · 977 commentsI'll be disappointed if he just shows up and is a commentator or something. I'm totally over Punk as a wrestler anyway, but he's so enjoyable to watch that one match and I'll be back on the Punk Train wanting to see him continue. I expect I'll be disappointed though and he'll sign for them in a non-wrestling role.
If they get him back in a wrestling role though then this is a huge, huge signing. Doing something that WWE couldn't tempt him to do.

Mid Card · 447 commentsI’m pumped for this, I’ve even signed up for the AEW package with Fite TV so I can watch it live!
I mentioned this in the Facebook chat a few days ago but with Punk and Danielson coming to AEW and the possibility of Adam Cole (bay bay!) and Pete Dunne leaving the ‘E, this is the most excited I’ve been for wrestling in a long time!

Admin · 3,242 commentsAEW presents their second episode of Rampage later tonight and it's expected to be a prolific show mainly because multiple reports indicate that CM Punk will be making his return to wrestling and AEW debut there. While nothing is confirmed except for a bunch of hints, fightfulselect.com reports that TNT officials are operating on the assumption that Punk is coming in. Citing multiple sources, the report notes that WarnerMedia/TNT officials are excited at AEW bringing in Punk and will pull out all the stops in promoting him once he appears and they are particularly excited in his return taking place in Chicago with other future shows also running in close markets over the next few weeks.
Also... did anyone catch Roman Reigns talking about how CM Punk wasn't that good? WWE sending out the big guns to try and downplay Punk signing for the competition is hilarious. Punks infamous promo with WWE is still one of the best ever... I don't even think I need to say which one I'm talking about because wrestling fans just know. He's remembered whatever people in WWE want to think.

All that time off and he still looks like he needs a good nap though.
