My short-lived wrestling career. :)

Reamer asked me what happened to my wrestling career over in the Going Away/Returning thread, and instead of clogging that up and derailing the intended purpose of that thread, I thought I'd make a new one. Here's what happened to my wrestling career if anybody is interested to read. 🙂

Started training in early 2007, started wrestling in mid-2008, wrestled for about a year and had loads of fun wrestling as Dexter Logic, exaggerated clumsy nerd character. Decided to stop in mid-2009. I had a fairly major face injury, had some surgery including a little piece of metal put under my cheekbone, and decided not to wrestle again:

I sort of didn't like the direction the shows were going, encouraging people to srsly fuck themselves up during matches. Things like young wrestlers (you can start training at age 13) being encouraged to spike bump, which hurts your neck like fuck for days afterward when you do it the way they were doing it. This is the aftermath of what somebody getting caned in the head twice looks like:

And what having the living shit caned out of your back looks like:

I only took one cane shot once in a hardcore match and that does hurt but when the adrenaline is flowing you don't feel it so bad, so everyone sort of fucks up their own long-term health for the sake of entertaining small crowds. Biggest crowd we ever pulled was 300, but usually shows had attendance in the 50-100 range.

It also took up lots of time as the company I was wrestling for has training three times a week, about an hour drive from my house, and if you don't go enough they don't book you.

Anyway, the match where I had my big injury was June 2009 and I decided to have one last match in December. Really fun singles match where I bladed because YOLO, only I went way too deep. I had hidden a razor blade with three of the four edges taped up under the ring skirt, behind a turnbuckle. I went to get it and bladed with my head under the ring but it was too dark and I couldn't see which corner was the sharp one. So I tried one and didn't feel anything, twisted it and tried the next two and didn't feel anything, went to try the last one and thought if I didn't feel anything this time then I'm just gonna give up on the blading thing. Anyway, it was the fourth corner and I ran the blade way deeper into my scalp than I needed too and bled shitloads. I also bladed above my hairline because I had to work in the morning. Drove 60 minutes home after the show. Took forever to stop bleeding. this photo is from the next day.

Wrestling was soooo much fun but definitely not a wise long-term hobby. No regrets at all though, I had the time of my life and went way further than anyone thought an extremely underweight lanky kid like me could have. I don't have very many good photos, but I have a handful of good videos. Three of my matches were even shown on community TV. I'll see if I can dig them up and Facebook one or two. I also have a video from my mum in the crowd with a camera, of when they booked me to win their annual Hardcore Rumble.

My submission finisher the Dextosterone, which if my opponent doesn't tap, can be rolled into this:

I continued to be involved in the wrestling business in Brisbane/Gold Coast as a referee, commentator, ring announcer and manager. But as time passed,I became less and less relevant, and I think I had two or three really lame shows in a row and didn't want to play any more. My last show had Luke Gallows in it, if anybody's interested. 😉

Very cool. Living the dream even if it was a painful and short one.

I don't blame you for calling it a career after needing facial surgery... just doesn't pay enough to take that... not saying that was a reason you had for retiring.. but that would probably be my mentality about it... i'd never get in a ring... i know a few indy guys with families as it is getting hurt pretty bad and make very little money out of it.

Didn't actually pay at all. The really good wrestlers who put on great 20+ minute main events get paid, also those that help out in training, but other than that we're all wrestling for fun and to improve, hoping that maybe one day we'll be good enough to be one of the paid main eventers. Although I have no idea about the financial aspects of the place, such as how much money they actually made after ticket sales and training fees, venue hire, rent on the gym we trained out of, how much money the wrestlers/trainers were actually paid, etc. I know it's no goldmine and the man that ran everything really really wants to be able to pay everyone but it just doesn't make sense. Sometimes when we put on a show in a new venue, a monthly show will have 25 workers in front of a crowd of 60, who each paid $15 for their seat.

Lots of really talented wrestlers, some who are seriously world class. There are a few different promotions within an hour of me (3 or 4), and they mostly share workers between them, but it's very hard to make money as either a wrestler or a promoter. Drawing new people into watching shows is tough and nobody really knows how to market themselves very well. I know that Sydney and Melbourne each have one or two bigger companies that regularly draw 1000+ people to their shows, but in general, trying to make an actual career out of pro wrestling is not a good idea in Australia. Anyone who's really serious about their craft should try and find a way to move to USA or Japan.
