It's the last BotB of November! Winter is coming, AHHH!!!

With love and a slight chill in the air,

Welcome, 4W faithfuls, to Battle of the Bands! In our previous installation, Rammstein defended their titles in a landslide victory against Praying Mantis. Uh... yeah, that's the long and short of it. ... What? I'm too tired to think up funny quips about the bands tonight! Do it yourself! 😋

When you vote, please request a musical act for the challenger list. Each act will be added to the list in the order they are requested. (Only one request at a time per person, please.) Battles will be usually be posted on Mondays, with the voting period lasting for about one week. I will try to post a heads-up as voting nears an end. When a band loses, it will be unable to re-challenge for 10 rounds. If an act achieves 10 straight victories, they will be retired from champion status and the next two challengers in the request list will duke it out for supremacy!

Note: The term "musical act" denotes any band, solo artist, vocal group... whatever you like. Basically, this is an all-inclusive popularity contest.

Voters are encouraged to include their opinions of the bands/artists in the battle, or at least a few short words about the act they voted for. Not a requirement, of course!

KOMM IN MEIN BOOT!

It's not what it sounds like! It means, "Come in my boat". ... You know what? Nevermind!

Rammstein

Rammstein is a German industrial metal band, formed in 1994 in Berlin. Throughout its existence, Rammstein's six-man lineup has remained unchanged—lead guitarist Richard Z. Kruspe, bassist Oliver "Ollie" Riedel, drummer Christoph "Doom" Schneider, lead vocalist Till Lindemann, rhythm guitarist Paul H. Landers, and keyboardist Christian "Flake" Lorenz.

The band helped to found a subgenre within German hard rock and metal that became known as Neue Deutsche Härte. The majority of their songs are in German, but they have also performed songs entirely or partially in other languages including English, Spanish, French, and Russian. Rammstein's award-winning live shows are known for their pyrotechnic elements and both on and off-stage theatrics. Rammstein's entire catalogue is published by Universal Music Group.

ince their formation in 1994, Rammstein has had no changes in their line-up. Richard Kruspe had said in a Revolver Magazine interview that it is because of the band respecting each other's wishes to take a break; either for personal reasons or to focus on a side project.

Rammstein have achieved particular fame for their over-the-top stage show, making such extensive use of pyrotechnics that fans eventually coined the motto "Other bands play, Rammstein burns!" (a quip at Manowar's song "Kings of Metal", which states, "other bands play, Manowar kills"). Following an accident at the Arena in Berlin in which some burning decorative parts fell (27 September 1996) the band started using professionals to handle the pyrotechnics. Lindemann subsequently qualified as a licensed pyrotechnician; he spends entire songs engulfed head-to-toe in flames. He has suffered multiple burns on his ears, head and arms.

Coldplay

Coldplay are a British rock band formed in 1996 by lead vocalist and keyboardist Chris Martin and lead guitarist Jonny Buckland at University College London (UCL). After they formed under the name Pectoralz, Guy Berryman joined the group as bassist and they changed their name to Starfish. Will Champion joined as drummer and backing vocalist, completing the lineup. Creative director Phil Harvey is often referred to as the fifth member by the band. The band renamed themselves "Coldplay" in 1998, before recording and releasing three EPs: Safety in 1998 and Brothers & Sisters and The Blue Room in 1999. The Blue Room was their first release on a major label, after signing to Parlophone.

Coldplay achieved worldwide fame with the release of the single "Yellow" in 2000, followed in the same year by their debut album Parachutes, which was nominated for the Mercury Prize. The band's second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), was released to critical acclaim and won awards including NME's Album of the Year. Their next release, X&Y, the bestselling album worldwide in 2005, received mostly positive reviews, though some critics felt it was inferior to its predecessor. Their fourth studio album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), was produced by Brian Eno and released to largely positive reviews, earning several Grammy Award nominations and wins at the 51st Grammy Awards. In October 2011, Coldplay released their fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto, which topped the charts in over 34 countries and was the UK's best-selling rock album of 2011, but received mixed reviews. In May 2014, they released their sixth album, Ghost Stories, which also received mixed reviews and topped several national album charts. In December 2015, the band released their seventh album, A Head Full of Dreams, which reached the top two in most major markets, but received generally mixed reviews.

Coldplay have won 85 awards from 252 nominations throughout their career, including one American Music Awards, nine Brit Awards, six MTV Video Music Awards, seven MTV Europe Music Awards and seven Grammy Awards from 32 nominations. They have sold more than 90 million records worldwide, making them one of the world's bestselling music artists. In December 2009, Rolling Stone readers voted the group the fourth-best artist of the 2000s. Coldplay have supported various social and political causes, such as Oxfam's Make Trade Fair campaign and Amnesty International. They have also performed at charity projects including Band Aid 20, Live 8, Global Citizen Festival, Sound Relief, Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief, One Love Manchester, The Secret Policeman's Ball, Sport Relief and the UK Teenage Cancer Trust.

Coldplay for me, every time.

Great to listen to, a variety of sounds and styles while they constantly reinvent themselves, and they just know how to make a memorable song. So Coldplay gets my vote.

I request Elton John.

Sigh... such a silly stereotype of Coldplay that really isn't true, especially these days. 😋

I implore you to try and contemplate suicide to Paradise, Adventure of a Lifetime, Viva La Vida, Christmas Lights lol

I've heard them many times on the radio.... many, many... many....... times............. And yeah, my tools begin to look very tempting after a while! :-P

Honestly though, they're not my thing and I do not like his voice. Fair play to them making it the right way, but that's as far as my admiration goes for this particular band.

Pretty close one for me. Maybe my hardest BotB decision so far.

Rammstein get my vote. Now, enjoy one of my long-winded spiels. (As it happens, "spiel" means "play" in German. That lined up nicely!)

I've talked a bit about Rammstein before. I don't know what I could really add of much meaning, so I'll just ramble! 😄 So, one thing that may be polarizing for some folks is the language itself. I personally lack any real effect from not understanding the lyrics as I listen, but I've also delved enough into their work to learn a lot of the translations. Sadly, a lot of the "oomph!" gets lost in translation. (And in terms of English-language versions of existing songs, they often change the lyrics hugely.) Rammstein's lyrics tend to be rife with double-entendres and innuendo. They're rather clever, honestly. They also have their fair share of poetic ballads, which typically have dark undertones and are often aided by a synthesized orchestral backing. It bears repeating that Til is a great vocalist, and everything he sings (or croaks out) has a lot of emotion behind it. I quite love this band, for sure.

So, Coldplay have of those run-away success stories that can sometimes agitate me greatly. For many years, they were never not on at least one FM station or college radio music block. They can be kinda whiny and grating, with nice side of cheese. ... So "grated cheese" rock, is that a thing yet? 😋 Anyway, I don't really mind Coldplay and in truth, I do enjoy a fair bit of their music. There's at least a few good songs in every era of their discography, and the ones that I enjoy the most, I don't mind saying I love. The Scientist, In My Place, Green Eyes, Talk, Princess of China, etc. These songs have all stuck with me for many years and I very much adore them. All that said, they just don't trump Rammstein for me, personally. Rammstein have been a more constant force in my life, and have more material that really hits me in the feels, as the kids say.

So... yeah! I vote Rammstein.

Gotta vote Coldplay, mainly because I haven't honestly heard any of Rammstein's work. I propose the band Skillet as a challenger as well.

Stingmon: I truly can't recommend Rammstein highly enough. Hell, I have a song linked right up top: if you've a mind to at all, give it a whirl! 🙂
