Hello, fellow 4W faithfuls! Welcome to Battle of the Bands! Each week, two musical acts (see note) will compete for your votes to become the BotB champion!

At BotB 34, we crowned a new champion in theatrical rocker Meat Loaf. This edition of BotB marks Meat Loaf's first match as defending champion!

When you vote, remember to request a musical act for the challenger list. Each act will be added to the list in the order they are requested. (Only one request at a time per person, please.) Battles will be usually be posted on Mondays, with the voting period lasting for about one week. I will try to post a heads-up as voting nears an end. When a band loses, it will be unable to re-challenge for 10 rounds. For the sake of variety, I'm adding the stipulation that if an act achieves 10 straight victories, they will be retired from champion status and the next two challengers in the request list will duke it out for supremacy!

Note: The term "musical act" denotes any band, solo artist, vocal group... whatever you like. Basically, this is an all-inclusive popularity contest.

Voters are encouraged to include their opinions of the bands/artists in the battle, or at least a few short words about the act they voted for. Not a requirement, of course.

Let's get ready to DRUMBLE!

Meat Loaf

Michael Lee Aday (born Marvin Lee Aday; September 27, 1947), better known by his stage name Meat Loaf, is an American musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and actor.

Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell trilogy of albums (consisting of Bat Out of Hell, Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell, and Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose) has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide. Almost 40 years after its release, it still sells an estimated 200,000 copies annually, and stayed on the charts for over nine years, making it one of the best-selling albums in history. He is also known for his powerful wide-ranging operatic voice and theatrical live performances.

After he enjoyed success with Bat Out of Hell and Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell and earned a Grammy Award for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance for the song "I'd Do Anything for Love", Meat Loaf experienced some initial difficulty establishing a steady career within the United States. However, he has retained iconic status and popularity in Europe, especially the United Kingdom, where he received the 1994 Brit Award for Best selling album and single, appeared in the 1997 film Spice World, and ranks 23rd for the number of weeks spent on the UK charts as of 2006. He ranked 96th on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock".

He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with worldwide sales of more than 80 million records. He has also appeared in over 50 movies and television shows, sometimes as himself or as characters resembling his stage persona. His most notable roles include Eddie in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), Robert "Bob" Paulson in Fight Club (1999), and "The Lizard" in The 51st State (2002). He has also appeared as a guest actor in television shows such as Monk, Glee, South Park, House, and Tales from the Crypt.

Placebo

Placebo are an alternative rock band, formed in London, England in 1994 by singer-guitarist Brian Molko and guitarist-bassist Stefan Olsdal. The band were soon joined by drummer Robert Schultzberg, who left in 1996 due to conflicts with Molko and was replaced the same year by Steve Hewitt.

Placebo gained exposure in 1997, after releasing "Nancy Boy", a song which Brian Molko described as "obscene". The band has sparked controversy at the beginning of their career because Molko wore dresses and make-up in public and talked openly about sex, sexuality and drug use.

Placebo collaborated with various artists over the years, such as David Bowie, Justin Warfield, Michael Stipe and Alison Mosshart.

Hewitt left in 2007 due to personal and musical differences and was replaced the following year by Steve Forrest. Placebo released two albums with Forrest, who left in 2015 to pursue his own musical career. As of 2015, Placebo performs as a duo with various live musicians.

Placebo utilise androgynous images and lyrical content. To date, they have released seven studio albums, all of which have reached the top 20 in the United Kingdom, and have sold around 11 million records worldwide.

I like a couple of Placebo songs but Meat Loaf I am a fan of and listen to his music semi-regularly so he gets my vote.

My vote, unsurprisingly, is for Placebo—whom I, myself, requested some time ago.  This band has meant so much to so many versions of me, my former self... they've definitely been along for the journey. Placebo were my introduction to post-punk, as you'll find their overall sound tinged with it up to about the Sleeping With Ghosts album. They were also the first band with dark and/or sexual subject matter that really hooked their claws in my former self's young mind. They had this... this atmosphere, a certain quality of mood and energy. The music somehow sounds like the band looks, and vice-versa. Feminine, nasally male vocals... overdriven and decidely Brit-goth guitar lines drenched in chorus... punchy picked bass cutting through the mix... splashy cymbal work... melodramatic ballads. All of that, updated for the '90s and perverse as all hell! These guys held nothing back, they never censored themselves. Living in Canada and having only discovered this band in '03, I can only imagine (and read about) how much kerfuffle Placebo must have incited. Looking back at the Molko/Olsdal/Schulzberg era—or even afterward, at the early days with Steve Hewitt—we're talking about a gender-expressive, out bisexual frontman; an out homosexual male multi-instrumentalist; and a heterosexual male drummer. Fucking awesome.

There's not much of their material I don't enjoy, from their debut to the present. There are some Placebo songs I can't imagine life without: "Special Needs"; "Without You I'm Nothing"; "Every You Every Me"; "The Bitter End" (it all started here!) just to name a few. They have some of the coolest music videos ever, not to mention my all-time favorite fan video (apparently; there's no real claim to it other than it having been uploaded by so-and-so on YouTube years ago)—"Follow the Cops Back Home" has an incredible unofficial music video that is simply unforgettable. It's simple, weird and sooo effective. Too bad it's such an old upload... picture quality isn't the best.

Of special note is that Brian Molko was basically my former self's introduction to the whole concept of androgyny... it opened up some mental doors. Not enough to help pin-point and decode all the deeply repressed feelings, but still invaluable. Check out Brian Molko's voice and look. It's as if some mad scientist was in his lab, standing next to a big slab and said, "Okay, so I have this femmy kinda male body I'm meant to turn into a a successful musician. Hmm. I'll take the vocal chords out of Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant; give him a permanent head cold, a guitar and some acid; lyrics like '70s-era Bowie on downers; make him look and dress like Siouxsie Sioux and/or Winona Ryder; then give him some of Robert Smith's effects pedals!" *lightning strike* "EUREKA!"

This band's music is invaluable to me and speaks to me like an old friend. Brian Molko's self-expression opened up a world of emotional and sexual confusion, intrigue and—ultimately—acceptance in a very repressed young person. Sexuality is still an odd, never-100%-clear thing for me and I have to think—to some degree—that without this band's lasting presence in my life story, the repression may have taken longer to begin fighting back against with honest self-exploration.

An all-time favorite and I could easily just go on and on about them... obviously.

I've enjoyed what I've heard from Placebo, but Meatloaf has more memories for me, so Meatloaf it is.

Also, I'd like to put forward Ronnie James Dio.
